Why your range swing disappears on the course
There is a particular species of misery known to every golfer. You spend an hour on the range hitting the ball better than you have all year. You walk to the first tee with the swing of your life in your pocket. By the third hole it has gone, and you cannot for the life of you work out where.
The usual explanation is nerves, and nerves are real. But they are nowhere near the whole story, and treating them as the whole story leads people to practise more of exactly the thing that caused the problem.
1The range is a different sport, and your brain knows it
On the range you hit the same club to the same target from a flat lie with a bucket of second chances. On the course you hit one shot, with one club, from an awkward lie, to a target you have never seen from that angle, and then walk away. These are not the same skill with different stakes. They are different skills, and being excellent at one buys you less of the other than anybody would like.
2What improves during practice and what survives it are different things
This is the single most useful idea in motor learning and almost nobody outside the field has heard of it. Researchers distinguish between performance, which is how well you do during a practice session, and learning, which is what is still there days later. They routinely come apart. Practice conditions that make you look best on the day are frequently the ones that leave least behind, which means the session that felt fantastic is not automatically the session that helped.
3Repetition flatters you in a way the course will not
Hit twenty 7-irons in a row and each one is corrected off the last. You are not solving the problem of hitting a 7-iron; you are solving the much easier problem of hitting a 7-iron immediately after another 7-iron, with the feedback still fresh. Shea and Morgan showed this in 1979: people who practised in a jumbled order performed worse during practice and better on a retention test days later than people who practised in neat blocks.
4And here the honest version parts company with the confident one
You will read elsewhere that this is settled. It is not. The laboratory finding is solid, but when researchers test it on actual sport skills the picture falls apart: a 2024 meta-analysis found the retention benefit shrinks to almost nothing in applied settings, and a 2023 review of 36 sport studies concluded that only about a fifth of its 183 pooled outcomes behaved the way the theory predicts. 5Practise the walk, not just the swing
The most transferable change is also the least glamorous: give every ball on the range a full pre-shot routine, a different club and a different target, and a pause between shots. It will feel slow and your strike quality will drop. That drop is not a sign it is going badly. It is the range finally resembling the game.
6Then find out whether it worked, which is harder than it sounds
Because performance and learning come apart, you cannot judge any of this by how the session felt. The only honest test is what happens on the course weeks later, which means you need a record that spans weeks. Almost nobody keeps one, which is why almost everybody relitigates the same swing change every spring.
Common questions
Is it just nerves?
Partly, and first-tee nerves are worth taking seriously. But nerves do not explain why the problem persists on the seventh hole when you have calmed down, and they do not explain why golfers who practise in blocks show the effect more strongly than golfers who do not. Treat nerves as one contributor rather than the explanation.
Should I stop practising on the range entirely?
No. Blocked repetition is genuinely good at building a new movement pattern, which is why the routine that follows from this still starts with a block of it. The mistake is spending the whole session there and concluding from a good session that the change has stuck.
How long before I know whether a change has actually taken?
Long enough that you will not remember the details unless you wrote them down. Three or four rounds is a reasonable minimum for a swing change, and the research reason is that anything shorter is measuring performance rather than learning.
Does this mean simulator and launch monitor practice is useless?
Not useless, but subject to exactly the same caveat. A simulator gives you superb immediate feedback in a fixed, repeatable context. That is excellent for building a pattern and poor at reproducing the conditions the pattern has to survive.
